How to Reach Sikkim from Pune
For travellers from Pune, Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) are the two main gateways to Sikkim. Both are located near Siliguri.
From Bagdogra or NJP, Gangtok is around 120–125 km away and normally takes about 4–5 hours by road, depending on traffic and road conditions.
By Flight – Recommended
For travellers from Pune, flying to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the best and most convenient option. Direct flight availability is limited, so depending on your travel date, you may need to take a connecting flight.
  • Route: Pune (PNQ) → Bagdogra (IXB)
  • Direct Flight: 1-2 flights daily ; around 3 hrs travel time.
  • Connecting Flight: Usually around 5–6 hours or more, depending on the layover
  • Bagdogra to Gangtok: Around 4–5 hours by taxi
Our Recommendation: Check direct flights first. If the timings don't suit your travel dates, a one-stop flight to Bagdogra is still the easiest way to start your Sikkim trip from Pune.
By Train
There is no direct train from Pune Junction (PUNE) to New Jalpaiguri (NJP). If you prefer travelling by train, you'll need to take a connecting route.
You can first travel from Pune to a major railway hub like Mumbai or Kolkata (Howrah) and then take another train to New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP), the nearest major railway station for Sikkim.
  • Route: Pune → Mumbai/Kolkata → New Jalpaiguri (NJP)
  • Total Journey Time: Around 50–55 hours or more, depending on the train and connection
  • NJP to Gangtok: Around 4–5 hours by taxi
Since the train journey is quite long and requires a change, we recommend travelling by flight from Pune to Bagdogra for a Sikkim holiday. It saves almost two days of travel time and makes the overall trip much more comfortable.
By Road
Travelling from Pune to Sikkim by road is possible, but it's a very long journey. The distance from Pune to Gangtok is approximately 2,300–2,400 km, with around 40–45 hours of driving time, depending on the route, traffic, and road conditions.
  • Distance: Around 2,300–2,400 km
  • Driving Time: Approximately 40–45 hours
  • Route: Pune → Central/Eastern India → Siliguri → Gangtok
For a regular Sikkim holiday, we don't recommend driving all the way from Pune. Flying to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and then taking a 4–5 hour taxi to Gangtok is much more practical and saves a lot of travel time.
Best Time to Visit Sikkim from Pune
The best time to visit Sikkim depends on the kind of holiday you're planning. Here's what each season offers:
March to May (Spring Season) – Best Overall Time to Visit
Pleasant weather, blooming rhododendrons and orchids, and clear mountain views make this the best season for sightseeing, honeymoon trips, family vacations, and photography.
October to February (Winter Season) – Best for Snowfall
The best time to experience snowfall is at Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, and Zero Point. Winter also offers crystal-clear Himalayan views and is a popular season for honeymoon trips.
June to September (Monsoon Season) – Best for Green Landscapes
Sikkim turns lush green during the monsoon, with fewer tourists and attractive hotel deals. However, occasional landslides and road delays are possible, so it's best to travel with an experienced local tour operator.
